Partner Stephanie Scharf was a featured panelist on a webinar hosted by SCG Legal, a worldwide network of 117 independent law firms. The webinar, “For Women in Law: A Conversation for Building Resiliency as a Foundation for Perseverance,” was sponsored by SCG Legal’s Women in Law TaskForce. Stephanie was joined by Fine Kaplan and Black's Roberta Liebenberg. As past chairs of the American Bar Association (ABA) Commission on Women in the Profession and co-authors, Stephanie and Roberta provided participants with an overview of a first-of-its-kind report, “Walking Out The Door: The Facts, Figures, and Future of Experienced Women Lawyers in Private Practice,” which they authored and jointly issued with the ABA and ALM Intelligence.
The report represents the results of a national survey of experienced men, women and managing partners from the nation’s 500 largest firms. The results show that women were far more likely than men to report everyday experiences that blocked their “access to success,” including access to business development opportunities, being perceived as less committed to career, and being denied or overlooked for promotion.
Stephanie and Roberta offered industry-wide recommendations for best practices related to recruiting, retaining and advancing women in law, addressed what we are learning from the pandemic, how COVID-19 has impacted women lawyers in private practice and how can women overcome the barriers that block their career paths.
